Differences in style of writing between "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath and "Girl, Interrupted" by Susanna Kaysen

Since the two holds are from two different genres, it is no instill that the styles in which they are written differ - Susanna Kaysens Girl, Interrupted is a collection of memoirs whereas Sylvia Plaths The Bell thrill is a bracing, though autobiographic to a degree. From a literary point of view, The Bell seismic disturbance is the better written of the two in that its narrative has a smoother flow and it is rich with the same kind of literary techniques and symbolism which any reader of Plaths poetry would be popular to; Girl, Interrupted on the other hand is slightly more amatuerishly written. It is worth bearing in mind though that Plaths tonic is a literary piece while Kaysens is an autobiographical piece. Plaths retain is essentially a fictional novel however when angiotensin converting enzyme draws comparisons between Plath and her heroine Esther Greenwood, it is obvious that The Bell shock is, to a portentous extent, autobiographical. Nonetheless, Plath wa s an established writer - almost wholly of poetry - and this shows accurate in the criminal record. Kaysen, on the other hand, was not a lord writer and, similarly, this shows through in her book. Although Girl, Interrupted is autobiographical, Kaysens style deviates from this at times. She doesnt necessarily explore events in chronological secern, sometimes startle back and forward between situations. The footprints in which Plath and Kaysen wrote their books differ quite a a considerably.

Kaysen has successfully injected some sense of humour into a book on a fairyl serious subject; granted this hum our is usually quite dark and almost sarcas! tic. The Bell Jar displays niggling - if any - humour and is instead very serious, a tone in-keeping with Plaths poetry. Both have achieved great praise and plaudit but the verity of the matter is that if Kaysens Girl, Interrupted were a litigate of fiction as opposed to a memoir it seems marvellous that it would have been closely as popular due to Kaysens whimsical and often uneven style of writing.
